Gareth Southgate refuses to rule out possibility of recalling Jamie Vardy to England squad

England boss Gareth Southgate has today discussed the possibility of in-form Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy making a return to the Three Lions setup.

Vardy’s England career

Vardy, now 32, essentially called time on his international career in the summer of 2018.

Following talks with Gareth Southgate, it was decided that the veteran would step aside, to allow for younger talent to work their way into the England setup.

‘This has been on my mind for a while,’ Vardy explained, during an interview with the Guardian.

‘I’m not getting any younger and you can see, to be fair to the gaffer, he wants to make it more youthful, which obviously had its benefits during the World Cup.’

All told, during his time in the colours of the Three Lions, Vardy found the net 7 times across 26 appearances.

‘Left that opportunity open’

The opening months of the new season, though, have seen the Leicester hitman absolutely on fire.

Vardy is the current top-scorer in the Premier League in 2019/20, having notched 10 goals in 11 appearances.

Such production even saw him rewarded with the award for the English top-flight’s Player of the Month for October earlier today:

As such, after naming his latest England squad yesterday, Gareth Southgate was since drawn on the possibility of Vardy’s scintillating form resulting in an international recall.

And, though, he admitted that, as things stand, such a scenario is altogether unlikely, Southgate refused to completely close the door on Leicester’s star man:

‘We know his quality.’

‘I have always left that opportunity open. I don’t see the point at this moment in time because the conversation I had with Jamie was around looking at younger players in that position.’

‘It isn’t one for now but we keep monitoring that because you have a ready-made experienced player who could come in if we felt that was the right thing.’
