A selection of Newcastle United supporters have taken to Twitter to debate whether or not their side should forget about competing in the cup competitions, in the hope of achieving better results in the Premier League under Steve Bruce.
The Magpies have taken two wins from a possible eight in the top-flight since Bruce filled the void in the dugout left by Rafael Benitez’s departure this summer, with both coming against two of last season’s top-six sides.
Victories over Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have only served to gloss over the cracks at St. James’ Park, however, as the Toon lost 3-1 at Norwich City with a shambolic defensive performance and were humiliated by Leicester City, when the Foxes ran out 5-0 victors.
Both wins to date succeeded the devastating defeats and Brendan Rodgers’ King Power Stadium natives eliminated Newcastle from this season’s Carabao Cup on penalties, as well, when the Magpies failed to convert their spot-kicks on home soil.

United now only look set to compete for Premier League survival and the FA Cup this term, and a discussion has sparked online over whether one should be prioritised over the other.
Many fans are set in their thinking that the knockout competitions should be respected, though, and feel anything other than trying would be a sign of supporters and the club lowering expectations.
Here are some of the views shared…
Why do we feel the need to even have this discussion? This isn’t even a question. You take each game as it comes and react accordingly. These lads are paid professional footballers. It’s their job to PLAY football. The ONLY reasons why they shouldn’t – injury or not good enough

Eh…we’ve already sacked off one…the one in which we have a marginally better record…the word you are looking for is ‘rhetorical’…

I thought that’s what we do anyway?

The fact this even being discussed is a surrender to Ashley. Shameful

It doesn’t matter what I think. NUFC have a great Cup heritage, one we should be rightly proud of. But the Club is mismanaged to such a degree I’ve stopped caring.

Should we? No.
Will we? Yes.

no, the league cup is the only chance we have to do anything better than “yay we finished above 17th”, under MA (in the current climate)
