Iranians buried their dead from an airliner shot down by the military as authorities on Wednesday identified more of the 176 victims of last week’s crash, which led to days of rage against Iran’s rulers followed by a police crackdown, Reuters reports. Emotions have been running high as the victims of the Jan. 8 crash are mourned. The national flag was ripped from the coffin of one victim when relatives collected the body and the mother shouted “Tear it off,” an online video post showed. Protesters took to the streets of Iranian cities for four days after the armed forces finally acknowledged on Saturday, after days of denials, that they had brought down the plane. In several places, demonstrators met […]

‘Dial this down’ Johnson tells Trump in apparent mocking of US president

The special relationship between the US and UK has taken a battering lately. Following the UK defence secretary’s comments that Britain would not automatically back the US in future wars, Prime Minister Boris Johnson called on President Donald Trump to “dial down” his conflict with Iran in a reprimanding tone. Speaking to the BBC this morning in a live interview inside his Downing Street residence, Johnson said “Let me be very clear. I don’t want a military conflict between us, the United States and Iran.” His comment “let’s dial this down” coming as Trump assumed a boastful and aggressive stance towards Iran, has been seen as an attempt to mock the US president. This wouldn’t be the first time though […]

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said today that victims of a Ukrainian flight that crashed in Iran would still be alive if the US hadn’t triggered tensions in the region. In an interview with Global television, Trudeau suggested America’s assassination of Iran’s General Qassem Soleimani had brought about the tensions in the region, and the subsequent response from Tehran to target a US military base in Iraq. The Ukrainian flight was accidently hit by a missile which was intended for the American base. He said: “I think if there were no tensions, if there was no escalation recently in the region, those Canadians would be right now home with their families.” READ: Iran signals Canada could play active role in […]

Iran has signaled that Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB) would play a more active role than international rules require in the investigation of the Iranian military’s shooting down of a Ukrainian airliner last week, TSB head Kathy Fox said on Monday, reports Reuters. A missile fired by Iran brought down the Ukrainian airline plane on January 8 killing all 176 aboard, including 57 Canadians. “In this investigation – and I want to be clear about this –  we do not yet fully know what the scope of our role will be,” Fox said in a news conference. She added that “there have been early signs that Iran is allowing the TSB to play a more active role than normally permitted”, […]

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, his voice sometimes breaking, on Sunday told a vigil for some of those killed in an Iranian plane disaster that he would “pursue justice and accountability” for what happened, Reuters reports. Iran says it mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian airliner on Wednesday, killing 176 people. Fifty-seven Canadians died, most of them of Iranian descent, in one of the most significant single losses of life Canada has suffered in 40 years. “You may feel unbearably lonely, but you are not alone. Your entire country stands with you, tonight, tomorrow, and in all the years to come,” Trudeau told a standing-room crowd of 2,300 in a basketball gymnasium in Edmonton, Alberta, home to 13 of the victims. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s diplomacy was vindicated on Saturday when Iran admitted that it accidentally shot down a Ukrainian airliner as Trudeau had suggested, and his handling of the incident may increase support at home, Canadian political observers said, Reuters reports. The crash on Wednesday killed 176 people, including 57 from Canada. Iran insisted for days that it did not down the plane, but Trudeau said on Thursday he had received intelligence that suggested it did. In a sharp reversal, Iran said on Saturday that its military had mistakenly shot down the airliner while on alert following Iranian missile strikes on U.S. targets in Iraq. “It helps (Trudeau) to demonstrate and assure Canadians that Canada will do its utmost to get […]

Iran said on Saturday its military had mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian plane killing all 176 aboard, saying air defences were fired in error while on high alert in the tense aftermath of Iranian missile strikes on US targets in Iraq, Reuters reports. Iran had previously vigorously denied bringing the plane down. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who until Saturday kept silent about the crash, said information should be made public. Wednesday’s crash heightened international pressure on Iran after months of friction with the United States and tit-for-tat attacks. A U.S. drone strike had killed a top Iranian military commander in Iraq on Jan. 3, prompting Tehran to fire at U.S. targets on Wednesday. Canada, which had 57 citizens on board, […]
